Midas ignores tirades

LINGAYEN, Pangasinan, Philippines  – Supreme Court (SC) spokesman Midas Marquez brushed off jokes and comments questioning his masculinity following a microphone incident during a press conference that went viral on social networking sites FaceBook and YouTube.

Marquez’s sexual orientation became the topic of debates after he was shown on video reacting to a microphone falling off the podium with gestures often associated with homosexuals.

But Marquez just laughed off the issue when asked about it by local newsmen here during yesterday’s launching of the SC’s Enhanced Wheels on Justice program.

Gov. Amado Espino Jr., who also graced the event, described the SC spokesman as “the most popular lawyer now in the Philippines.”

“Kaya po pati microphone nanginginig, nahuhulog (That’s why even the microphone is shaking, falling),” Espino teased Marquez.

Espino added that was the reason they decided to use a goose-neck microphone.

Interviewed by a local television reporter, Marquez joked, “Hold tightly the microphone.”

When asked if he was one of them (referring to the third sex), Marquez replied: “I will try to apply if they would accept me.”

“That’s fine with me. We know the truth,” he added.
