Vizcaya couple names child 'Quiel'
SOLANO, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines – Aside from damage to crops, typhoon “Quiel” left behind a cute bundle of joy for a couple who named their newborn daughter after the latest storm to hit the country.
Quiel Toni Lunag first saw the light of day around 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 1 while Quiel was unleashing its fury, giving health attendants an idea to name her after the storm.
Councilor Roland Carub said the baby’s parents, Roland, 33, and Marilou, 29, of the town’s Barangay Curifang, eventually adopted the name Quiel.
The baby’s parents, Carub said, belong to the indigent sector with the father working as a farm laborer, while the mother is a housekeeper.
The baby, Carub said, is the second of Marilou, who had remarried after her first husband reportedly abandoned her.
Their small abode, lent by a kind neighbor, remained waterlogged as a result of the twin typhoons Quiel and “Pedring” that hit the province last week.
Baby Quiel, according to councilor Regie Valino-Valdez, was also the first to be born at the town’s newly inaugurated birthing clinic, a project funded by the Department of Health in partnership with the local government under Mayor Philip Dacayo.
Attending the wife during labor at the town’s birthing clinic was Dr. Antonio Labasan, municipal health officer, with rural health personnel Juliet Crisostomo and Nenita Ortiguerro.
