MANILA, Philippines — Nasa 7,000 pulis ang isasailalim ng Commission on Elections (Comelec) sa pagsasanay upang maging backup poll workers para sa May 12, 2025 National and Local Elections (NLE) sakaling mag-withdraw bilang miyembro ng election registration board (ERB).

Ayon kay Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia,  pagsasanay sa mga pulis ay nakatakdang isagawa mula Marso 3 hanggang 31, 2025, kasabay rin ng training sa ERB members.

“We will be training more or less 7,000 from the Philippine National Police (PNP) to serve as the back-up ERBs just in case the regular members of the electoral board will not be able to  serve in the elections,” ani Garcia.

Paglilinaw naman ni Garcia, hindi ito ang unang pagkakataon na magde-deploy sila ng mga pulis upang maging poll workers.

Aniya, noong 2022 elections, mga pulis din ang nangasiwa sa botohan sa 175 clustered precincts sa Cotabato City dahil sa security concerns.

“Ginawa na ‘yan dati sa Cotabato City. Lahat ng electoral members hindi nag-serve noong 2022. Buti mayroon kaming DOST-certified na PNP personnel na para mag-serve as members of the electoral board,” paliwanag pa ng Comelec chief.

Nagbabala rin naman siya sa mga taong may planong i-intimidate ang mga election board members.

May nakareserba rin silang pulis sakaling may manakot sa mga  electoral board members o gagawa ng paraan para hindi makapag-report sa halalan.
