MANILA, Philippines — A family of four died when a fire struck a residential area in Las Piñas before dawn yesterday.

Residents of Bernabe Compound in Barangay Pulang Lupa Uno were awakened when a fire broke out at 1:20 a.m.

The blaze reached the first alarm, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection.

Las Piñas fire marshal Supt. Josephus Franco Alburo said a 35-year-old mother and her two children aged three and 17 were sleeping in the wooden mezzanine when the fire broke out.

“The mezzanine collapsed during the fire,” Alburo told reporters.

Authorities said the father’s remains were found near the kitchen as he was struck by the collapsed mezzanine.

Damage to property was placed at P600,000.

Arson probers said they have yet to determine if the fire was caused by faulty electrical wiring or an overheated appliance.
