Toll relief sought for NLEX motorists

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Transportation has asked operators of the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) to waive toll between Balintawak and Marilao to compensate motorists for the heavy traffic while the Marilao Interchange Bridge is being repaired.
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon also urged NLEX Corp. to open more lanes along the Balintawak-Marilao stretch.
Dizon wants NLEX Corp. to waive toll along the northbound segment due to heavy traffic being experienced by motorists.
NLEX Corp., however, refused to provide toll relief and instead committed to speed up the repair of the bridge, which was damaged when it was hit by an 18-wheeler truck at dawn on Wednesday.
The company said it remains committed to minimizing inconvenience to motorists and ensured swift restoration of normal traffic flow in the affected area.
As of Thursday night, NLEX Corp. said a third lane was opened to improve traffic flow, which will be followed by a zipper lane along the southbound direction.
The Toll Regulatory Board has notified NLEX Corp. to explain why it should be spared from penalties.
The STAR has seen a copy of the notice directing NLEX Corp. to restore the bridge before the Holy Week travel surge.
