DPWH special committee to probe collapse of Isabela bridge

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has formed a special committee to thoroughly investigate the collapse of the newly opened Cabagan-Sta. Maria Bridge in Isabela last month.
DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan designated DPWH Undersecretary for legal services Anne Sharlyne Lapuz as head of the committee.
Bonoan said the committee would compel employees with knowledge of the circumstances surrounding the incident to appear during the investigation.
He gave the committee until April 25 to submit its findings.
A Senate Blue Ribbon subcommittee is set to conduct an inquiry into the collapse of the P1.22-billion bridge to determine possible corruption that may have contributed to the poor construction of the project.
Experts from the Bureau of Construction and Design at the DPWH central office have been tapped by the DPWH-Ilocos to evaluate and assess the wreckage of the Cabagan-Sta. Maria Bridge.
