MANILA, Philippines — A vlogger suspected of spreading false information online has found himself in hot water after authorities seized his electronic devices during the implementation of a search warrant.

The Philippine National Police-Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) served a Warrant to Search, Seize and Examine Computer Data against Jun Abines on Feb. 22, following a formal complaint lodged by PNP-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) chief Brig. Gen. Nicolas Torre III – the subject of Abines’ online post.

Abines allegedly posted a photo on social media falsely claiming that the police official was hospitalized and in critical condition.

The PNP said the post had no factual basis and caused unnecessary alarm to Torre’s family and colleagues.

Authorities tracked down Abines through cyber-patrolling and digital surveillance. During the operation, inspectors conducted onsite forensic examination and confiscated the suspect’s electronic devices for further analysis.

Abines is facing charges for violation of Article 154 of the Revised Penal Code, or the Unlawful Use of Means of Publication and Unlawful Utterances, in relation to Section 6 of Republic Act 10175, also known as the Cybercrime Prevention Act.

Torre confirmed the operation in a Facebook post, saying that “actions have consequences.”

“This caused worry and distress to my family and friends. What did I do? I relied on the law,” Torre wrote in Filipino. “I applied for a search warrant to retrieve the phones and computers used for this nonsense. Now you’re crying on social media? You should face the consequences of your actions.”

Abines, a known supporter of the Duterte family, criticized the police raid, saying his gadgets were confiscated at midnight following Torre’s cyber libel complaint and the issuance of a search warrant.

“They did not allow me to close my bank accounts, GCash and personal accounts,” Abines declared in a Facebook post.

He also accused authorities of tampering with his mobile phone during the seizure.

In response, ACG acting director Brig. Gen. Bernard Yang said the PNP is committed to combating online misinformation.

“Spreading false information online imposes legal consequences. We ensure that social media and other digital platforms are not used as tools for deception and public disturbance,” Yang said.

The PNP-ACG urged the public to be responsible digital citizens and verify information before sharing it online.
