Angat Dam’s water down to safer level

MALOLOS, Philippines — Operators of Angat Dam in Bulacan stopped discharging water yesterday after the elevation went down to a safer level of 214.02 meters.
Maria Teresa Serra, manager of the National Power Corp.’s flood forecasting and warning system division, said all of Angat’s spillways were closed at 11:02 a.m.
Serra said that by the time the floodgates were shut, no rainfall event was monitored over Angat’s watershed.
The dam started discharging water on Wednesday after its elevation increased to 215.27 meters, or 3.27 meters above its normal high water level of 212 meters.
Dam operators said reducing Angat’s water level would protect the reservoir’s structural integrity.
Meanwhile, spilling operations in Bustos Dam, also located in Bulacan, will be stopped in the next few days, according to Josephine Salazar, chief of the National Irrigation Administration-Central Luzon.
Bustos provides irrigation supply to farmlands in Bulacan and parts of Pampanga.
