MANILA, Philippines —  Women’s group Gabriela has condemned the alleged abuse suffered by disc jockey Jellie Aw at the hands of her fiancé, Jam Ignacio.

“Women are not punching bags. No woman should have to endure abuse, yet many continue to suffer in silence due to fear, stigma, victim-blaming and the lack of support systems,” Sarah Elago, Gabriela’s first nominee in the May midterm elections, said.

“In a society where women are usually blamed, DJ Jellie’s decision to speak out is a courageous fight against the culture of violence, silence and lack of accountability,” Elago said.

Safe spaces must be expanded and stiffer penalties for perpetrators – especially those in power – of violence against women must be enforced, she noted.

Funding for prevention programs and victim support services should be increased, while laws against abuse of women must be fully implemented, Elago said.
