PNP: Engineering works needed to make Marilaque Highway safer
MANILA, Philippines — More than increasing police visibility, engineering works are needed along Marilaque Highway in Tanay, Rizal to instill discipline among motorists, according to Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil.
Marbil made the proposal after a motovlogger died during a motorcycle stunt exhibition along the highway over the weekend.
Five others were injured in the incident that went viral on social media and prompted the Highway Patrol Group to intensify HPG visibility in the area, from 17 to at least 32 officers.
Marbil said deploying more police officers along Marilaque is not enough to prevent road crashes.
He said barriers and signages warning people about dangerous portions of the road should be installed.
Marbil said the PNP would coordinate with the Department of Public Works and Highways as well as local government units with jurisdiction over Marilaque on measures needed to reduce road accidents.
The Marilaque Highway connects Quezon City to Infanta in Quezon province.
