Tulfo son fined P5,000 for EDSA busway violation

MANILA, Philippines — The congressman son of Sen. Raffy Tulfo will be fined P5,000 after he was accosted for using the EDSA bus lane, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) announced yesterday.

Quezon City Second District Rep. Ralph Tulfo will not be facing traffic-related charges, but his apprehension will be deducted from his allowable 40 demerit points, according to LTO chief Vigor Mendoza II.

“He was issued a traffic citation ticket. If he does not contest it, he will pay a fine of P5,000,” Mendoza said.

“He has no other violations. Normally, reckless driving is imposed when there is an attempt to run over an enforcer. There was none. He only entered the bus lane and was apprehended,” Mendoza added.

According to reports, the congressman’s convoy was accosted for using the EDSA busway on Jan. 23.

The younger Tulfo has apologized for the act.

Mendoza said the LTO is eyeing to increase the fines imposed on motorists who will enter the EDSA Carousel.

“What is important is, once the driver is arrested, it will be added to his demerits. If the demerit reaches 40 points, it will be a ground for suspension or revocation of the license,” Mendoza said.

The LTO chief said the proposed stiffer fines should serve as a deterrent to prevent motorists from using the EDSA Carousel.
