MANILA, Philippines — Ten years since that tragic day in Mamasapano, Maguindanao, the gallantry and heroism of the Philippine National Police’s (PNP) Special Action Force (SAF) “Fallen 44” continue to inspire and live on.

In paying tribute to the policemen who were killed in action during the counter-terrorism operation in Mamasapano on January 25, 2015, Baguio City Mayor Benjie Magalong urged the Filipino people to honor the sacrifices of the SAF 44 by striving for a safer, more united, and more peaceful Philippines.

“Their heroism compels us to do better — to ensure that their sacrifices were not in vain and that the lessons of Mamasapano guide us toward a future where such tragedies are never repeated,” Magalong said in a statement.

“It is therefore imperative for all leaders in government, the military, and law enforcement to prioritize communication, accountability, and unity in the pursuit of national security and peace,” he added. "Addressing the root causes of conflict in our society is equally important. A lasting resolution to the challenges in Mindanao requires a commitment to dialogue, mutual respect, and the empowerment of all communities."

Magalong also highlighted the importance of reflection and learning from the events of Mamasapano. He said, "Beyond remembrance, this day calls for reflection. The events of Mamasapano teach us that effective leadership, inter-agency collaboration, open communication, and thorough planning are essential in any mission. Missteps and lapses in coordination can lead to devastating consequences, as we witnessed a decade ago."

Magalong, who once led the Board of Inquiry (BOI) on the Mamasapano incident, held then President Benigno Aquino III, Gen. Alan Purisima and SAF Chief Getulio Napeñas accountable for the deaths of the 44 SAF troopers due to their bypassing of the chain of command.

He and other personalities who had significant roles and opinions in the Mamasapano tragedy appear in the documentary "Fallen not Forgotten”, which is currently streaming on Netflix and Appletv.

In 2017, then President Rodrigo Duterte issued Proclamation 164, declaring January 25 of every year as a day of national remembrance for the heroic sacrifice of SAF 44 members.

Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police (PNP) observed the National Day of Remembrance for the SAF 44 at the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) in Cavite with the theme, "Courage Beyond Measure: Remembering the Sacrifice of the SAF 44 for Peace."

During the event, PNP Chief Rommel Francisco Marbil pledged to the families of the fallen heroes that the memories of their loved ones will forever be honored.

"They were not just names on a roster but sons, fathers, brothers and friends —men of valor and selflessness who faced overwhelming odds to uphold peace and security. To their families, we stand with you, not just today but every day, to honor their memory," he said.

“As we commemorate their heroism, we renew our pledge to uphold the ideals for which they fought," he added.

For his part, Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla reminded the nation of the sacrifices made by the SAF 44 and the enduring lessons they left behind. He further reflected on how, even after 10 years, the sacrifice of the SAF 44 remains etched in the hearts of the Filipino people.
