BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — Up to 21 people have been arrested in Western Visayas for violating the gun ban since the election period started on Jan. 12.

Of the figure, 11 were collared in Negros Occidental, four each in Capiz and Iloilo and one in Aklan, according to Lt. Col. Arnel Solis, spokesman for the Western Visayas police. Another violator was arrested by members of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion.

The gun ban is being imposed in preparation for the May 12 elections. It aims to ensure peace and order and prevent poll-related violence during the election period, which will run until June 11.

Police officers assigned at Comelec checkpoints have been directed to observe proper procedure and other related policies when inspecting motorists.
