Town councilor shot dead in Ilocos Sur
CAMP FLORENDO, La Union, Philippines — A reelectionist municipal councilor in Caoayan, Ilocos Sur was gunned down by two men in Barangay Tamag, Vigan City over the weekend.
According to police, Caoayan town councilor Anthony Verzola was sitting in front of a restaurant when two men on a motorcycle shot him in the head.
Responders rushed Verzola to the nearest hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.
Investigators recovered an empty shell of a caliber .45 pistol at the site. They also interviewed witnesses to identify and charge the suspects for the killing.
The Workers and Peasants’ Party (WPP) condemned the assault as it called for a swift and thorough investigation.
Sonny Matula, WPP president, said the “senseless act of election violence has no place in a civilized society” as he stressed the need to address rising threats to electoral integrity and public safety.
“We must further strengthen the enforcement of the nationwide gun ban, particularly in areas like Ilocos Sur, to prevent such tragedies and protect the lives of candidates and voters alike,” Matula said. — Mayen Jaymalin
