MANILA, Philippines — Philippine cinema icon Gloria Romero, recognized as a pioneering and enduring force in the industry, passed away yesterday at the age of 91.

Her daughter, Maritess Gutierrez, confirmed the news in an ABS-CBN report, with the family’s official statement also sent out to media outlets yesterday.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of my beloved Mother, Gloria Galla Gutierrez, a.k.a. Gloria Romero, who peacefully joined our Creator earlier today, Jan. 25,” the family said.

“In this time of loss, our family deeply appreciates the support, prayers, sympathy, all the lovely messages and heartfelt condolences that we received. She will surely be missed dearly. May we continue to offer prayers for the eternal repose of her soul.”

Tributes have since poured on social media to remember and celebrate Romero’s legacy.

Film Development Council of the Philippines chair Joey Reyes said in a Facebook post, “Rest eternal in the embrace of Our Father. You shall always be the Queen of Philippine Movies. Thank you for making our silver screen sparkle.”

Born in the US in Denver, Colorado, on Dec. 16, 1933, Romero had a storied movie career that commenced in the 1949 film “Ang Bahay sa Lumang Gulod,” where she played an extra.

She eventually rose to fame and earned acclaim for roles in “Kasintahan sa Pangarap” (1951) and “Palasig and Monghita” (1952).

But it was Romero’s performance in “Dalagang Ilocana” that earned her her first FAMAS Best Actress recognition, leading to a career spanning decades and studded with multiple accolades.

More memorable projects followed, including “Nagbabagang Luha” (1988) and “Tanging Yaman” (2000).

Romero’s final film was in the 2018 Metro Manila Film Festival Best Picture “Rainbow’s Sunset,” where she also won the Best Actress award for her performance in the LGBT-themed family drama which also co-starred the late movie and theater legends Eddie Garcia and Tony Mabesa.

A wake is being held at the Arlington Memorial Chapel Hall A, Araneta Ave., Quezon City. Today is being limited to family and friends only, while public viewing will be allowed on Jan. 27 and 28.
