Pinoy passenger caught with over $273,000 in luggage
MANILA, Philippines — Security screening officers intercepted a Filipino passenger bound for Hong Kong for not declaring $273,905 or about P16 million in his checked-in luggage on Jan. 22.
According to the Office of Transportation Security (OTS) at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3, the passenger failed to present a clearance or permit from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.
Kim Marquez, OTS spokesperson, said security officers Yvonne Dujali and Louie Candor were conducting usual security screening for all check-in luggage when they noticed an opaque image on the X-ray monitor.
To confirm its content, the unnamed passenger was called to witness the manual baggage inspection.
Mark Almase, Customs assistant deputy collector for passenger services, said the bills, in excess of the allowable $10,000, were confiscated.
