MANILA, Philippines — Malabon Mayor Jeannie Sandoval on Monday condemned the spread of fake news and disinformation targeting the city government’s programs and services.

She accused certain groups of manipulating public opinion for political purposes.?

“Alongside our continued efforts to provide honest, reliable and beneficial programs, we are encountering these kinds of fake news regarding our service to the city,” Sandoval said in a statement.

She urged residents to remain vigilant and be responsible when sharing social media content, advising them to be cautious of suspicious messages and unverified information.?

The city government recently reported the existence of bogus Facebook accounts impersonating Sandoval and her husband, former congressman Ricky Sandoval.

The fake Facebook accounts reportedly send friend requests and solicit phone numbers from users under the guise of offering e-load promotions.

Sandoval assured residents that they will not allow false information to spread in the city.

She encouraged residents to verify news from official sources, including the local government’s official Facebook page.

The mayor directed her legal team to gather information for the possible filing of cases against those responsible for spreading disinformation.
