Kanlaon spews ash twice anew

Office of Civil Defense Administrator Ariel Nepomuceno talks with some evacuees affected by the recent unrest of Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island.

MANILA, Philippines — Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island emitted ash twice anew yesterday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

State volcanologists said the ash emissions were recorded from 1:30 a.m. to 1:39 a.m. and between 8:24 a.m. and 8:43 a.m. yesterday.

“These events generated superheated and grayish plumes that rose 150 meters above the crater before drifting southwest,” Phivolcs said.

Phivolcs said that at least 12 volcanic earthquakes were recorded, including one volcanic tremor that lasted five minutes. Monitoring stations also recorded that the volcano spewed at least 2,302 tons of sulfur dioxide.

The agency said the edifice of the volcano remains swollen and Alert Level 3 remains active.

Office of Civil Defense Administrator Ariel Nepomuceno visited Canlaon City last week to assess the situation of evacuees affected by the volcano’s restiveness.

Nepomuceno also met with local government leaders, including Canlaon Mayor Jose Cardenas, to discuss safety measures and the heightened risks associated with the volcano’s activity.

During his visit, Nepomuceno acknowledged the emotional and practical challenges faced by affected residents as he reaffirmed the national government’s commitment to providing the necessary support and resources.

Nepomuceno also emphasized the importance of regular communication with local leaders as the situation evolves, ensuring that the community’s needs are addressed proactively while maintaining a focus on their safety and well-being.

Alert Level 3, which means hazards such as sudden explosive eruption, pyroclastic density current, ashfall, rockfall and lahars during heavy rains may occur, remains in effect at Kanlaon.

Phivolcs added that another possible eruption similar to the Dec. 9, 2024 event may occur.
