400 foreign POGO workers in NBI custody
MANILA, Philippines — Following a raid on an alleged Philippine offshore gaming operator hub in Parañaque, more than 400 POGO workers have been placed in the custody of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
The POGO hub, suspected of engaging in love and investment scams, employed mostly Chinese, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Myanmar nationals.
NBI Director Jaime Santiago has described the establishment as a “big POGO scam hub,” wherein scripts found on the workers’ computers were allegedly used for fraud.
Scam facilities are not ceasing operations despite a blanket POGO ban ordered by President Marcos last year, authorities noted.
The foreigners underwent proceedings at the Bureau of Immigration (BI) and their electronic devices are being examined for evidence.
The BI and NBI conducted the raid on Jan. 8.
Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla has ordered the Parañaque government to explain the presence of the POGO hub in the city.– Bella Cariaso
