Gunman killed in Batangas ‘shootout’

Intelligence officers of the Batangas police were conducting a surveillance operation against a fugitive from Masbate when the gunman shot them, triggering a firefight, according to Col. Lt. Ira Morello, Batangas City police chief.

BATANGAS, Philippines — An unidentified man was killed in an alleged shootout with police officers in Batangas City on Friday.

Intelligence officers of the Batangas police were conducting a surveillance operation against a fugitive from Masbate when the gunman shot them, triggering a firefight, according to Col. Lt. Ira Morello, Batangas City police chief.

Morello said the shootout occurred at around 1:40 p.m. near the Batangas port in Barangay Calicanto.

The officers were approaching people to ask questions when the gunman allegedly drew a gun and shot them.

The officers retaliated, hitting the gunman fatally.

Police have yet to identify the fatality.
