Search for missing Pinoy seafarer suspended

Roel Pareño - The Philippine Star

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has suspended the search for a Filipino crewmember of a bulk carrier who fell overboard as the vessel was sailing in the waters off Basilan and Sulu early this week.

The Coast Guard District Southwestern Mindanao (CGDSWM), the lead unit for the search and rescue mission, stopped the search to allow PCG vessels to replenish assets following intensive aerial and maritime operations to find Aguaviva Gel Jutba, 44, deck fitter of the RTM Zheng HE.

The CGDSWM gave assurance that the search and rescue operation would resume as soon as the PCG completes the replenishment.

Jutba was last seen standing at the portside as the RTM Zheng HE was traversing the international sealane northwest of Zamboanga City on Dec. 26.

The vessel came from China and was headed to Australia when the crewmember fell overboard.

The PCG deployed its BRP Capones to find Jutba. Two other bulk carriers joined the search.

Although the search was suspended, the PCG said it continued monitoring the seas of Basilan and Sulu for possible signs of the missing seafarer.

A notice was sent to mariners, advising vessels passing through the area and other maritime stakeholders to help find Jutba.
