MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police has mobilized over 37,000 personnel nationwide as part of heightened security during the Christmas season, a PNP official said yesterday.
PNP public information office chief Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo said the initiative, dubbed “Ligtas Paskuhan,” aims to safeguard communities, public spaces and commercial establishments during the holidays.
Fajardo said police officers, in coordination with barangay officials, would monitor residential areas and businesses left unattended while residents travel for the festivities.
She emphasized the need for vigilance against common crimes such as burglary.
“We remind everyone to ensure that their homes and establishments are secure if they will be away for an extended period of time,” she said.
Fajardo also advised travelers to brace for traffic jams.
“Aside from food and water, pack plenty of patience,” she said, adding that motorists should check vehicle conditions and ensure that they are fit to drive.
Travelers were urged to arrive early at transport terminals to avoid the holiday rush.
Police also warned the public against sharing real-time travel updates on social media as such posts can alert criminals that homes are unoccupied.
“Share your travel experiences only after you’ve returned home,” she said.
The police deployment, which began on Dec. 15, includes heightened alert status and canceled leaves, except for emergencies.
Fajardo noted that PNP regional directors have the discretion to adjust deployments based on local needs, particularly during dates requiring increased security.
As of yesterday, the PNP had not received any specific threats to public safety.
“We maintain coordination with other government agencies and law enforcement bodies to monitor and validate any potential threats,” Fajardo said.
