MANILA, Philippines — Think three times before you consider giving a pet to someone this Christmas.

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), in a Facebook post, reminded the public that pets are not toys and should not be given as Christmas presents to people who are not prepared to make a long-term commitment to become a fur parent.

“Let’s spread kindness this Christmas not only to people, but also to animals who depend on our care and commitment for their entire lives,” PAWS said.

The group said gifting pets “is rarely a good idea” even if the receiver is fond of animals or the sender intends to teach someone compassion and responsibility.

“Unlike material gifts, animals are living beings with mental, emotional and physical needs. Owning a pet is a serious, lifelong commitment that requires the pet owner’s careful thought, research, preparation and readiness – emotionally, mentally and financially,” it stressed.

PAWS said there have been instances wherein pets that were previously given as gifts “sadly end up neglected or abandoned once the initial excitement and novelty fade.”

The group also advised those who have been given pets as gifts but are aware that they are not ready to take on the responsibility to politely decline the gift.

Meanwhile, pet owners are reminded that they should spay or neuter their pets before rehoming them to prevent unwanted litters and the continued cycle of “gifted” animals, which only worsens pet homelessness.

It also encouraged adopting or fostering a pet from a shelter instead of buying a pet from a store.

CHRISTMAS.
