15 abandoned balikbayan boxes set for delivery – BOC
MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Customs (BOC), in coordination with the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), is set to return 15 unclaimed balikbayan boxes to their rightful owners before Christmas.
At a press briefing yesterday, BOC Assistant Commissioner Vincent Philip Maronilla said they are working on a deed of donation with the DMW to deliver the balikbayan boxes sent by overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
“The DMW will distribute the boxes to the owners,” Maronilla said.
Several balikbayan boxes remain abandoned, but the BOC will be able to process only 15.
“Maybe we could start distributing the first batch of donated balikbayan boxes to recipients before Christmas,” Maronilla said.
He said the OFWs who sent these balikbayan boxes were victims of consolidators who promised to help the migrant workers bring home their boxes to their families.
“These boxes would be given to the intended recipients because we know how hard our OFWs worked so that they could send these to their families. It is not their fault that they were scammed by bad people,” the BOC official said.
