COTABATO CITY, Philippines — Eight people died when a 10-wheeler truck rammed vehicles and a row of houses in Makilala, Cotabato yesterday morning.

Among the fatalities were truck driver Leopoldo Ibañez and residents Joey Pamplona, his wife Tina and their son Jeremiah.

Police have yet to identify the four other fatalities.

Lt. Col. Rolly Oranza, acting chief of the Makilala police, said the truck was negotiating a downhill road in Barangay Malasila when Ibañez lost control of the wheel.

The truck, which was loaded with sacks of fertilizer, rammed a smaller truck, several cars and motorcycles before hitting houses.

Members of the provincial disaster risk reduction and management office responded to the accident.

Gov. Emmylou Taliño-Mendoza urged police to compel the owner of the truck to compensate the families of the victims.
