PNP: Bonifacio Day protesters charged

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police has filed criminal charges against a militant group leader and a protester for allegedly attacking PNP personnel during a Bonifacio Day rally in Mendiola, Manila.

At a press briefing at Camp Crame yesterday, PNP public information office chief Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo said charges of violating the Public Assembly Act, direct assault and disobedience to persons in authority were filed against the leader of the Kilusang Mayo Uno and one of the protesters before the Manila prosecutor’s office.

Eight police officers were injured during the clash, according to Fajardo.

“Police arrested one person who instigated the violence and assaulted our officers,” Fajardo said.

The protester was taken into police custody.

According to police, several other rallyists were charged.

The PNP said the clash occurred after protesters commemorating the 161st birth anniversary of revolutionary leader Andres Bonifacio attempted to march to Mendiola.

Authorities said the demonstrators breached the police barricade along Claro M. Recto, leading to a violent scuffle.

According to the PNP, 46 people were injured, including 37 protesters and eight police personnel.

During the commotion, protesters reportedly seized the body-worn camera of a police officer.
