Dog meat trader meted 3 years in prison
MALOLOS, Philippines – A Bulacan court recently sentenced a dog meat trader to up to three years of imprisonment for killing dogs and selling their meat.
In a Facebook post, the Animal Kingdom Foundation said it took them two years to secure the conviction of the trader who was arrested two years ago in San Ildefonso town.
The Animal Kingdom Foundation did not name the trader or provide more information about the case, but said he was found guilty of violating Republic Act 10631, which amended RA 8485 or the Animal Welfare Act.
“The two-year journey to reach the verdict was arduous. But finally, justice is served for the four dead aspins and seven live dogs who were recovered in an operation in Sta. Catalina, San Ildefonso, Bulacan,” the group said in its post.
Aspin refers to asong Pinoy or native Philippine dog.
It also said that, together with the Soi Dog Foundation, Animal Kingdom continues with its “unwavering dedication to seeking justice for the victims of this vicious trade.”
The two animal welfare groups hope the case encourages others to help “protect those who cannot protect themselves.”
