Biñan execs told to explain reclamation project

Ed Amoroso - The Philippine Star

LAGUNA, Philippines —  Officials of Biñan City have been ordered to respond to a complaint filed by residents regarding a reclamation project in Laguna de Bay.

The Office of the Deputy Ombudsman for Luzon directed Mayor Walfredo Dimaguila, Vice Mayor Angelo Alonte and the city council to answer the complaint filed by Ferdinand Tabsing of Barangay Dela Paz and Resurrecion Buarao of Barangay Malaban within 10 days. The complaint, filed in June this year, was supported by affidavits of 42 residents.

The complainants said the project, which started in 2019 and covered 15 hectares of Laguna de Bay, deprived them  of their livelihood. They said their communities have since been experiencing flooding that lasts up to six months.

The dust and noise generated by trucks transporting filling materials caused the people, especially children, to get sick, the complainants said.

The STAR tried but failed to reach the respondents for comment.
