MANILA, Philippines — State volcanologists have warned of a possible  eruptive unrest after Kanlaon Volcano in Negros showed signs of increased activity yesterday.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said up to 64 volcanic-tectonic earthquakes were recorded in less than 12 hours since midnight.

“The public is reminded that Alert Level 2 or increasing unrest prevails over Kanlaon. The current seismic activity may lead to an eruptive unrest and increased alert level,” Phivolcs said.

The agency said the quakes were generated by rock fracturing processes as magma rises toward the surface.

Kanlaon emitted 7,087 tons of sulfur dioxide on Tuesday, higher than the daily average of 4,234 tons that has been recorded since the volcano erupted on June 3.

Entry into the volcano’s four-kilometer-radius permanent danger zone remains prohibited.
