17 nabbed for illegal fishing

MANILA, Philippines — Seventeen fishermen were arrested for illegal fishing in Polillo, Quezon on Sunday.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said the suspects were caught fishing in the waters off Balesin Island.

Seized from the suspects were an unmarked boat, fishing equipment and their catch with an estimated total value of P1.42 million.

Among those arrested were boat skipper Rendon Mendoza, engine operator Joel Caballera and master fisherman Edwin dela Cruz.

Authorities said a modified Danish seine or buli-buli, which is used in illegal fishing, was found in the suspects’ boat.
