BJMP ready for transfer of Atio hazing convicts

MANILA, Philippines —  The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology is ready for the transfer to the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) of the 10 Aegis Juris fraternity members who were convicted for the hazing death of University of Santo Tomas law freshman Horacio “Atio” Castillo III, a BJMP official said yesterday.

The convicts are still detained at the Manila city jail.

Supt. Jayrex Bustinera, spokesman for the BJMP, said they are waiting for a commitment order from the Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 11, which found the fraternity members guilty of violating the Anti-Hazing Law of 1995.

“Other requirements have been complied with, except the commitment order from the court before transferring them to the BuCor,” Bustinera said.

On Sept. 17, 2017, Castillo was pronounced dead on arrival at the Chinese General Hospital following initiation rites of the fraternity members.
