NCRPO secures Metro for 2025 polls

Newly graduated police officers arrive at the Manila Police District (MPD) headquarters for their deployment in different parts of the city on September 3, 2024.

MANILA, Philippines — With candidates filing their certificates of candidacy (COC), the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) on Tuesday assured the public that security preparations are underway for the 2025 midterm elections.

NCRPO director Maj. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said they have drafted a comprehensive security plan to ensure the peaceful conduct of elections across Metro Manila.

Nartatez noted that the filing of COC, which will run until Oct. 8, and the election period starting January 2025 have been factored into their strategy.

“So far, we have not yet encountered election-related incidents,” he said.

Nartatez said the NCRPO is closely coordinating with local government units and the Commission on Elections, which has deputized the police force to ensure public safety throughout the filing of COCs.

The NCRPO chief also stressed the importance of engaging with local communities to identify and neutralize potential threats.

“We need to focus on threats, which may come from local terrorist groups, criminal rings and private armed groups. These elements could disrupt the peaceful conduct of elections,” Nartatez said.

The NCRPO is continuously updating its records and monitoring potential sources of violence as the police force remains vigilant against people or groups attempting to influence voters through intimidation.
