Binay mulls legal action over malicious Facebook post

MANILA, Philippines —  Makati Mayor Abby Binay has condemned a misleading Facebook post that depicted the city government in a negative light.

Binay said she is considering legal action against those responsible for the malicious Facebook post.

The post, shared by Streetlife Manila, featured a two-year-old photo of a clamped motorcycle with a caption alleging neglect by a traffic enforcer.

“Naputulan ng kadena si Manong Angkas. Itinabi niya saglit, imbes na tulungan sana, clamp at ticket ang binigay ng traffic enforcer (Manong Angkas parked his motorcycle by the roadside due to a broken chain. Instead of helping him, the enforcer clamped his vehicle and issued a violation ticket),” the post read.

Binay said the online post was a deliberate attempt to spread disinformation.

“Streetlife Manila is maliciously spreading fake news and disinformation on social media,” she said.

Investigation showed that a traffic enforcer from the Makati Parking Authority was involved in the incident.

The Public Safety Department at city hall had nothing to do with it, Binay said.

She said the traffic enforcer clamped the motorcycle, but later removed it without issuing a violation ticket.

“Contrary to the caption, the driver received due consideration and was not issued an ordinance violation receipt,” Binay said.
