MANILA, Philippines — Up to 7,000 employees and staff of the Valenzuela City government have been subjected to mandatory drug testing.
Mayor Weslie Gatchalian said the two-day drug testing, which started on Tuesday is part of initiatives to achieve a drug-free workplace.
Gatchalian and other local officials underwent drug testing.
Employees who will test positive for drug use face dismissal from service and other stiff sanctions, according to Gatchalian.
Although illegal drugs are not rampant in Valenzuela, Gatchalian said the local government ensures that every community in the city is safe.
Aside from rehabilitation, the city also gives drug abusers livelihood training that they can use as they reintegrate into the community once released from the facility, he said.
Gatchalian said the local government would continue its peace and order initiatives, including the intensified campaign against illegal drugs.
