Government aids Pinoy crewmen from Houthi-attacked vessel
MANILA, Philippines — Twenty-two of the 23 Filipino crewmen of MT Sounion, which was attacked by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea, received financial assistance from the government upon their return to the country on Saturday.
Department of Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Cacdac reported that each of the seafarers received P75,000 from the DMW.
The seamen will get additional cash from the Department of Social Welfare and Development as well as the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, Cacdac said.
“They will also undergo medical assessment and psycho-social counseling,” he said.
The Greek-owned oil tanker MT Sounion was attacked by Houthi rebels on Aug. 21.
Meanwhile, 17 Filipino crewmen of another vessel, MV Groton, which was also attacked by Houthi rebels, arrived home on Friday night.
