MANILA, Philippines — The local government of Navotas has partnered with the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) and Spanish Red Cross (SRC) for an initiative aimed at reducing waste in the city.

Mayor John Reynald Tiangco on Friday signed a memorandum of agreement on the project “Promotion of Green and Circular Economy through Civil Society Engagement and Good Governance in Highly Urbanized Coastal Cities in the Philippines.”

The other signatories are PRC secretary general Gwendolyn Pang and SRC head of delegation Maria Grazia Pressacco.

Under the agreement, the Navotas government will be a key partner of the two humanitarian organizations in the project’s implementation in Barangays North Bay Boulevard South Kaunlaran, North Bay Boulevard South Dagat-Dagatan, North Bay Boulevary South Proper and North Bay Boulevard North.

Funded by the European Union, the project aims to reduce waste and provide livelihood by promoting sustainable development and a circular economy in three coastal cities in the country: Zamboanga City, Manila and Navotas.

The project will expand to cover more areas as it targets 200,000 beneficiaries by 2025.

The goal of the initiative is reducing the single-use plastics, reusing materials and fostering behavioral change to create a system where nothing ends up in landfills.

By promoting a circular economy, it seeks to build stronger, more resilient communities while addressing the environmental challenges of waste and pollution.

“This project happened at the most opportune time, as we face the challenge of reducing waste,” Tiangco said.
