Mandaluyong road rage suspect wounded in shootout

MANILA, Philippines — A motorist who shot two people in a road rage incident in Mandaluyong City earlier this week was wounded after shooting it out with policemen about to arrest him in Intramuros, Manila Thursday afternoon.

After two days of massive manhunt, police officers apprehended 32-year-old Jerome Sanchez at the corner of Victoria and General Luna streets at around 4:20 p.m., National Capital Region Police Office director Maj. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said in a message on Viber.

Instead of giving up, Sanchez engaged policemen in a shootout using a .45 caliber handgun, leaving him and a police master sergeant wounded. The suspect was brought to the Philippine General Hospital for treatment.

Nartatez said they had been hunting Sanchez since Tuesday’s road rage shooting incident in Mandaluyong.

Police said Sanchez was driving a Mitsubishi Lancer sedan when he and another motorist on a similar vehicle figured in a traffic altercation after a near mishap along Maysilo Circle in Barangay Plainview past 1 a.m.

Sanchez followed the other driver, and on reaching F. Martinez street in Barangay Addition Hills at around 1:15 a.m., he shot at the unidentified motorist but instead hit a customer and a helper of an eatery in the vicinity. The suspect then fled.

Nartatez said policemen tracked down Sanchez through CCTV footage which showed him speeding off toward Manila.
