MANILA, Philippines — Filipinos and other workers in British Columbia are getting a salary increase, the Department of Migrant Workers announced yesterday.
According to DMW, the government of British Columbia has enforced an hourly minimum wage increase for the lowest paid workers, residential caretakers and camp leaders.
The new hourly rate increased by 3.9 percent, from $16.75 to $17.40.
“The minimum wage applies regardless of how employees are paid – whether on commission or incentive basis,” the DMW noted.
“If an employee’s salary is below the minimum wage for the hours they worked, the employer must top up their payment so that the pay is equal to the current minimum wage,” the agency added.
The DMW also cautioned aspiring Filipino workers in Canada to transact only with licensed recruitment agencies.
The agency said collection of recruitment fees for deployment to British Columbia and other provinces in Canada is prohibited.
Canada has a “no placement fee policy” for all types of workers, the DMW noted.
