ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Two workers died while trying to rescue their companion who fell into an underground fuel storage in this city yesterday.
Joel Dungog, 34, and Jomar Cagit, 30, died from suffocation while their companion, Jonas Calderon, was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The workers were fixing the concrete pavement at a gasoline station in Barangay Curuan when Calderon slipped and fell into the storage.
Dungog and Cagit descended into the storage to rescue Calderon, but they lost consciousness after inhaling the fumes.
Bystanders responded and rushed the workers to the Cristiano Paragas Memorial Hospital, where Dungog and Cagit were declared dead on arrival.
