MANILA, Philippines — Following the country’s good showing in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, an administration lawmaker has filed a bill in the House of Representatives that aims to “enhance and institutionalize support” as well as benefits provided to Olympians, national athletes, coaches and trainers.

House Bill 4088, authored by Pwersa ng Bayaning Atleta party-list Rep. Margarita Nograles, seeks to produce more world-class athletes such as double gold medal winner Carlos Yulo as well as bronze medalists Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas.

“Our athletes have given us immense pride and honor, as demonstrated by their remarkable performances in Paris. It is our duty as a nation to ensure that they are supported not just during their peak years, but throughout their lives,” Nograles said.

“This bill is a testament to our commitment to their welfare and a recognition of their invaluable contributions to the country, “ she added.

Nograles said the Philippines could produce more world-class athletes if they are properly supported by the government.

The measure aims to address the challenges faced by Filipino athletes, ensuring that they receive the recognition, support and benefits that they deserve throughout and beyond their active careers, according to Nograles.

The bill was filed in response to the challenges and hardships faced by Filipino national athletes, many of whom have struggled with inadequate support after their careers.

Nograles cited the experiences of past Olympic medalists, such as boxer Mansueto Velasco, who waited 25 years to receive his promised incentives, and Lydia de Vega, who battled cancer with minimal financial support.
