MMDA: 1,513 tons of trash hauled after typhoon

MANILA, Philippines — At least 1,513 tons of garbage were hauled in Metro Manila after the onslaught of monsoon rains and Typhoon Carina, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority reported yesterday.

The MMDA Metro Parkways Clearing Group said truckloads of trash were hauled from July 24 to Aug. 5.

Acting MMDA Chairman Romando Artes said they expect the volume of collected garbage to increase as cleanup operations are still ongoing.

Artes noted that improper waste disposal, which clogs drainage systems and prevents rainwater from flowing freely, caused flooding in Metro Manila.

He urged the public to manage their waste responsibly, noting that the cycle of dumping and cleaning will not solve the flooding problem.
