90 trucks of trash hauled in Metro after floods

MANILA, Philippines — Ninety truckloads of garbage were collected in Metro Manila after Typhoon Carina and the southwest monsoon flooded most parts of the region last week.

The figure was equivalent to 18,316 trash bags or 387.65 tons of rubbish hauled during cleanup operations from July 24 to 28, according to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA)’s Metro Parkway Clearing Group.

On Wednesday, MMDA personnel collected 1,026 bags or five trucks of garbage around the metropolis.

As the floods started to subside in the succeeding days, more garbage was hauled by the MMDA: 3,398 bags or 17 trucks on July 25; 4,447 bags or 22 trucks on July 26; 4,689 bags or 23 trucks on July 27, and 4,756 bags or 23 trucks on Sunday.

The MMDA said most of the trash were collected from San Juan, Marikina, Parañaque, Manila and Taguig.

Malabon City, where several barangays were inundated, piled up only six bags of garbage.

The MMDA has reiterated its appeal to Metro Manila residents to dispose their garbage properly to prevent flooding.
