Manila archdiocese to hold 2nd collection for Carina victims
MANILA, Philippines — The Archdiocese of Manila (RCAM) announced yesterday that there would be a second collection in all masses this weekend for those who were affected by heavy rains and flooding caused by the southwest monsoon that was intensified by Typhoon Carina.
In a two-page circular, Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula instructed all parish priests, rectors and chaplains under the archdiocese to hold a second collection during the evening masses on July 27 and all masses on July 28 to help those badly affected by the strong floods.
He said that continued compassion should be extended to the victims, the poor, the hungry and all those in need.
“My heart and prayers go out to all those affected by the heavy rains and flooding. We extend our sincere gratitude to the churches and homes that opened their doors to accommodate those affected. The solidarity among Christians is deeply felt in times like these,” Advincula said.
All collections should be remitted to the archdiocese’s accounting office on or before Aug. 7.
Meanwhile, Caritas Philippines aims to partner with the dioceses as they distribute relief goods to those affected by the heavy rains and flooding.
Caritas Philippines, the social arm of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, said in a statement that it “is dedicated to providing immediate relief through our Alay Kapwa program. We’re working closely with dioceses to ensure the swift delivery of aid to those most in need.”
It had also reached out to their partners for additional support.
“Together, we stand in solidarity with affected families, striving to bring them comfort and hope in the wake of this disaster. Our thoughts and prayers are especially with those who lost loved ones. May they find peace and strength in this time of immense grief,” Caritas Philippines said.
Those who intend to give donations through Caritas Manila may send them via the bank accounts under “CBCP Caritas Philippines Foundation Inc.”
The bank accounts and account numbers are BPI (4951-0071-08); Metrobank (632-7-632028322); BPI (4951-0071-16); Metrobank (632-7-632028586); and BDO (004508034192).
In a related development, some churches have opened their doors to those in need of temporary shelter during last Wednesday’s heavy rains and flooding.
In a Facebook post, the Diocese of Novaliches said that less than 5,000 families sought shelter in its parishes and chapels.
“Several churches in the Diocese of Novaliches are now serving as evacuation centers for people affected by Typhoon Carina. These churches provide safe shelter and basic necessities for displaced individuals and families,” the diocese said.
Parishes under the diocese have also been distributing goods to heavily affected areas.
“We are working closely with local parishes and barangay units to ensure efficient support for the most vulnerable communities,” according to the diocese.
