BALAOAN, La Union, Philippines — New cases of African swine fever (ASF) have been recorded in this town, authorities said yesterday.

Balaoan Mayor Aleli Concepcion confirmed the cases in a post on social media.

“The municipal government confirms ASF-positive cases in Barangay Sablut. Selective culling of pigs within a 500-meter radius from the ground zero will be undertaken,” Concepcion said in the post.

She issued an order prohibiting the movement of hogs for 14 days, starting Saturday.

Residents were not allowed to raise new hogs within 90 days in areas affected by ASF.

In 2020, the disease affected hograisers in several barangays in this town, prompting the local government to order the culling of hundreds of hogs.

Concepcion gave assurance that pork products being sold in the market are safe for human consumption.

She ordered the police and barangay officials to secure all entry and exit points to prevent the transport of contaminated pork products.
