MANILA, Philippines — At least 113 rido or clan wars have been resolved in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, a BARMM official said yesterday.

Mohd Asnin Pendatun, BARMM Cabinet secretary, said in a forum yesterday that the resolution of the clan wars is part of the government’s peace and security efforts.

“This is on top of the decommissioning process under the peace agreement. So this is quite unique to the experience of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region… We hope to continue this to reduce the number of horizontal conflicts,” he said.

Pendatun said vertical conflicts, like those between groups and the government, have already been addressed by the peace process.

The BARMM official also noted a reduced poverty incidence in the region, from 55.9 percent to 34 percent.

“In 2018, poverty incidence in BARMM was at 55.9 percent among families. That year, the majority of the families in BARMM were considered poor. But in 2021, the time of the Bangsamoro Region in Muslim Mindanao, we were able to reduce the 55.9 percent to only 39 percent. We are the only region that was able to achieve a double-digit poverty reduction,” he said.

He also cited updated data showing that the poverty incidence was further reduced to 34 percent last year.
