MANILA, Philippines — Pope Francis has appointed Filipino Bishop Ryan Jimenez as archbishop of the diocese of Hagatña (formerly Agana) in Guam.

Jimenez was born in Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental.

The CBCPNews, the official news service provider of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, said the 52-year-old Jimenez would replace Archbishop Michael Byrnes, 64, who resigned in March 2023 due to health problems.

Prior to his appointment, Jimenez has been bishop of Chalan Kanoa in the Northern Mariana Islands since 2016.

He will be installed as archbishop at the Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica in Hagatña on Aug. 15.

Jimenez is currently president of the Conferentia Episcopalis Pacifici and vice president of the Federation of Catholic Bishops Conferences of Oceania.
