BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — The provincial government of Kalinga has imposed a temporary ban on live hogs, pork and pork-based products coming from Abra.

This developed after local officials received reports that more than 200 hogs in Manabo town in Abra died of African swine fever (ASF).

Officials said that on July 4, six samples collected from hogs in Barangay San Juan tested positive for ASF.

Earlier, Manabo Mayor Darell Domasing banned the sale of hogs, pork and pork products to prevent the spread of the disease.

The ban was directed to all hog shippers, meat vendors, shops and other establishments selling meat products.

“The public is advised to exercise extreme caution when purchasing and consuming processed pork meat products. Only products sourced from areas not affected by ASF should be consumed,” the provincial government of Kalinga said in an advisory.
