MANILA, Philippines — Up to 442 families in Malabon may now call themselves owners of the land where their homes were built as the city government awarded them Certificates of Eligibility for Lot Allocation (CELA) on July 1.

Mayor Jeannie Sandoval congratulated the beneficiaries, saying the granting of the CELAs would be the start of a more “decent and peaceful life for them.”

The beneficiaries are 101 families from Sitio Sto. Niño in Barangay Baritan and 341 from Sangciangco street in Barangay Catmon, according to the City Housing and Urban Development Department (CHUDD).

The local government owns both land areas, which were awarded to the beneficiaries as part of its housing program.

The families who received their CELAs were assessed by the CHUDD and the Community and Urban Poor Affairs Office.

“The city government will continue providing sustainable housing for families who need better homes,” CHUDD head and city administrator Alexander Rosete said.

Malabon has started the construction of an 11-story building in Barangay Tinajeros, which will provide 88 housing units for residents in need.
