MANILA, Philippines — The Manila city government has rejected a proposal to transfer the Manila Zoo to Masungi Georeserve in Rizal.

“Relocating the Manila Zoo is farthest from our mind. It is not among the options we are considering. It will not be the Manila Zoo if it is located anywhere else,” Mayor Honey Lacuna said. “The zoo is not going anywhere.”

Sen. Francis Tolentino proposed to move the Manila Zoo, which will mark its 65 years on July 25, to the geotourism site in Baras, Rizal.

“We want a zoo that is accessible to Manileños. Masungi is so far. First, we want a good study and a roadmap done,” Lacuna said.

Manila Zoo houses more than 550 specimens of exotic wildlife, representing species of mammals, avian and reptiles. It also has a botanical garden where over 10,000 plants are being grown and propagated.
