Driver, 75, evades checkpoint, bumps police chief
CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines — A 75-year-old driver tried to evade a police checkpoint in Cainta town in Rizal province, bumping the chief of police in the process.
Rizal police director Col. Felipe Maraggun said the senior citizen, whose name was withheld, came from a drinking session with friends at a nearby golf course when the Cainta police pulled over his vehicle for routine inspection on Wednesday.
Instead of stopping, the man stepped on the gas, hitting Cainta police chief Lt. Col. Mark Anthony Aningalan who was manning the checkpoint in Barangay San Juan along with seven of his men.
The driver was eventually stopped after some of the officers fired at the vehicle’s tires.
Maraggun told The STAR that the man was charged for reckless imprudence resulting in serious physical injuries, driving under the influence of liquor and abandonment of one’s victim.
He said Aningalan was discharged from the Cainta Municipal Hospital on Thursday.
